If you’re the type who diligently installs security updates the moment they’re available across all your devices, hold off on patting yourself on the back just yet.
Microsoft just dropped some news that might shed light on why your Windows machine is still lagging behind in updates despite your best efforts.
Updates are crucial for all of our devices.
We all know updates are essential. They’re like the gatekeepers, constantly patching up holes and vulnerabilities that cybercriminals are eager to exploit. Updates not only shore up security but also enhance the usability of software and add new features.
It’s standard practice to roll out updates promptly on every device in your business. If you’re already doing this, give yourself a virtual high-five.
But here’s the kicker: Microsoft reports that a staggering number of Windows PCs aren’t up-to-date.
So, what’s happening?
Could it be employees habitually hitting the snooze button on update notifications?
Well, that could be part of it. Updates can be time-consuming, and sometimes people just need to get on with their tasks. While we don’t endorse this behavior, we get it.
Technical glitches with updates could also be contributing to the problem.
However, the main culprit seems to be something else entirely. Turns out, Windows machines need to stay online for a considerable stretch of time for updates to go through smoothly.
Six hours are needed to update Windows.
Microsoft’s recently explained that when an update is installed, a device must remain on and connected to Windows Update for a minimum of two consecutive hours, and six hours in total. That gives your device time to successfully download the update and install it.
To ensure all your devices stay updated without fail, the best approach is to have your team leave their devices on and connected overnight. You might also need to tweak your Power Management settings to prevent devices from slipping into hibernation or deep sleep too quickly. And to counter any environmental impact, make sure you’re following recommended power settings for each device.
If you’d like any help checking these settings, and that all of your devices are running the latest security updates, just let us know.
